We understand and appreciate that there are a variety of perspectives when it comes to the health and safety of children, as well as the general population, and we appreciate the inquiries we have received from returning families as well as those new to WLR over the past 6-12 months regarding COVID concerns. Over the summer, some difficult decisions had to be made. The desire to return to in-person programming has been strong! Initially, we thought we would be able to return to "operations as usual" in the classroom. However, once it became clear that this would require masks be worn by everyone when indoors, WLR chose to move all programming outdoors. As a part-time, supplemental program, our time with your children is limited. So rather than spending precious class time policing mask compliance, we made the decision to only offer outdoor programming for our in-person classes. Masks are NOT required outside; however, for any who so choose, a mask may be worn if desired. Since WLR receives funds from California public charter schools on behalf of many of its students, we are required to abide by state and local mandates in regard to COVID19 health and safety protocols when working with youth groups. Therefore, parents / guardians are required to agree to the WLR policy and waiver upon registration with WLR for any in-person programs. In addition, please note the following:
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

It has been quite a summer! Between navigating the ever-changing requirements for those working with school aged-children, to the heat and the smoke permeating our environment, and so much more, we are pleased to welcome you and your children to WLR this fall.
As any parent knows, change is inevitable! We witness our children's growth and adapt to those changes accordingly. And with the latest COVID requirements, WLR is choosing the "path of least resistance" in order to meet the varying needs and comfort levels of participating families. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!! That means that all of our programs this fall will be either:
Come gather with Ms. Ciana, Ms. Sandi and friends for an adult-oriented gathering this Friday, August 6th in the Arden Area. Yes! Dads are welcome, too, for this Essential OIL MIXER. Let's celebrate Summer in person, outdoors!!!! Friday, August 6, 2021 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. @ Ciana Keller aka Zen Mama, in the Arden area/SAC. text for new address 916-213-2466
(older teens welcome, as they will love to make crystal rollers with Josie. The event is geared towards adults, please leave the young ones at home.) Questions or RSVP to Ciana Keller @ 916-213-2466. Let Ciana know you are with WLR! WLR is pleased to announce that our Outdoor Education program will resume this fall at Ancil Hoffman Park with long-time favorite instructor, Mr. Huff.
By developing a relationship with the natural world, students learn academic subjects such as ecology, geology, and natural history, but perhaps most importantly, their sense of wonder is deepened, leading to a lifelong appreciation for the earth that sustains all of life. In turn, this foundation helps children grow into caring stewards of the earth as they mature toward adulthood. Spending time outdoors and being active stimulate brain and body development and have a variety of health benefits from sleeping better to lowering blood pressure to decreasing anxiety. Practicing mindfulness and exploring the outdoors helps develop an awareness of one’s physical and mental state. Students practice communication and teamwork skills with students of various ages and backgrounds, helping them to develop empathy. WLR's Outdoor Education program will meet on Thursdays beginning September 23rd with two separate sessions, one for kindergarten through Grade 2 and the other for Grades 3-8. Click here to learn more about the program. Registration is expected to open by August 1st. Hello Parents & other Educators!

So that you and your family can focus on the traditions that create lasting memories for you and your children. Whether decorating, making gifts, baking, celebrating Advent, Hanukkah, Christmas or other festivals of Light, we are wishing you and yours a peaceful, healthy winter break. In the meantime, we are preparing our 2021 Winter-Spring Session. As COVID concerns and state and local mandates are still in effect, we will continue with online programming for the time being. Again, we will offer both Family Programs and Individual Programs. If you have not already done so, join the WLR mailing list to be to be notified when registration opens. Read on for a preview of what's coming! Family ProgramsMost of these programs are designed for grades K-8. These flexible classes allow you to engage in the program whenever it is most convenient for you and your children. Parents may choose to preview the program and bring the instructions directly to their children, minimizing screen exposure if desired. You can view the videos repeatedly if needed; PDF files with written instructions and graphics are also included. Perspective Drawing Perspective drawing allows an artist to create the illusion of depth as they transfer the space of our three dimensional world onto a flat, two dimensional medium. Renaissance architect Filippo Brunellschii is credited with devising the drawing technique of linear perspective. Leonardo da Vinci used perspective drawing on his painting of The Last Supper. In our five-lesson workshop, with paper, pencil, and ruler as your main tools, you will learn one-point, two-point, and three-point perspective drawing. Perspective drawing connects you and your point of view with the world around you. Instructor: Dr. Rick Tan Materials needed: paper, ruler, pencil Grades: best for Grades 6 through adult. Tunisian Crochet Learn the art of Tunisian Crochet! This online course is perfect for children and adults. No crochet or knitting experience necessary. Tunisian crochet is easier on the hands and wrists than traditional crochet and knitting; it is faster than knitting and uses a bit less yarn than traditional crochet. Instructor: Jennifer Tan, MA Supplies Needed:
Individual ProgramsBoth Mr. Huff and Ms. Russi will offer classes via Zoom at set times, helping your family to create and sustain an ongoing weekly rhythm. Mr. Huff's classes will include "A History of Time" -- an integrated program including mechanics, geography, history, social studies, and projects to make at home. Students will learn how we track time, from the seasons to microseconds as well as how time-keeping is connected to astronomy, how clocks work and how to build a sundial. Mr. Huff will also teach Astronomy. Students will explore the starry skies, the history of astronomy and the movement of the moon, planets and stars.
Both of Mr. Huff's classes will be taught on Thursday mornings. Similar to last year's in-person program that included an active morning circle, Ms. Russi will teach Movement & Story. This 45-minute class will include songs, verses and movement, followed by a story. Depending on students enrolled, some fun mental math may also be integrated. This class is designed for Grades 1-3, but you know your child best! So some kindergarteners and/or 4th graders may also enjoy and benefit from this class. Ms. Russi's program will likely be offered on Monday and Friday mornings, 10:30 - 11:15 a.m. Stay tuned for more information coming soon! Or join the WLR mailing list to be to be notified when registration opens. As a homeschooling mom, I remember what it's like: a class may look great when you read the description, but will my child like it enough to be truly engaged? And now with nearly all programs online, you may have even more questions!
That's why we are offering a 1st time class for free for our Grammar Through Story & Art Class, recommended for Grades 1-4. This class introduces the 4 sentence types and the 9 parts of speech in an imaginative, engaging manner. Each week, students are introduced to a new character through story. Then they will draw the character and learn more about the sentence type or part of speech through a variety of activities. Mr. Declarative Sentence will be introduced during our first class which your student can try out for FREE! Just click this link to register for the class. You will receive the Zoom link for the free class, and we will send a reminder email as well. FREE CLASS DATE/TIME: Friday, 9/18/20, 10:30 - 11:15 a.m. via Zoom WHAT TO BRING: 1-2 pieces of plain paper; crayons or colored pencils Questions? If you are on FB, come on over to Like our page and view more videos and photos. Feel free to contact us with any questions. We are excited to announce that Registration for the 2020 Fall Session is now open! As you are likely aware, due to COVID19 state and local mandates, WLR is currently offering virtual learning programs. In the future, we may add outdoor programming as mandates are eased and/or lifted. As always, we aim to bring you high quality programs along with flexibility. You can choose from 3 main types of of programs: Our Family Programs focus on arts and crafts such as Watercolor Painting, Geometric Crocheting, Song & Movement and Clay Animals. Offered via Ruzuku, a very easy to use online platform, these programs allow more than one student from the same family to learn together. Parents may choose to view the programs with (or without) their student(s) to assist as needed. The programs include video lessons along with written material and graphics. Once WLR receives your payment or P.O./voucher, you will be emailed a link to the chosen program(s) that will remain available for a minimum of 8 weeks. Each class includes 5 separate lessons, taking approximately 50 minutes to complete. But again! You can review each lesson as often as needed while the link is live. WLR Family Programs are taught by Dr. Rick and Jennifer Tan. Our Individual Programs focus on academics, and in most cases, with art integrated into the class. Offered via Zoom, these classes allow for students to interact with the instructor and like an in-person class, meet at specific times. To facilitate an enjoyable and effective experience for all, parents will be required to either view an Orientation video or attend a Zoom Orientation (of approximately 30 minutes) prior to their students' participation in class. Mr. Huff will be teaching California Geography, California History and a customized Math practice program via Zoom. The first class meeting with Mr. Huff is September 10th. Ms. Sandi will teach Grammar Through Story & Art and Lady Bird Johnson's Wildflowers via Zoom. The first class meeting with Ms. Sandi is September 11th for the Grammar class which meets 2x/week. The Lady Bird Johnson class is on Thursdays and begins September 17th. In addition, Ms. Sandi is offering discounted Homeschool Student rates for her ongoing yoga classes. These classes are the perfect introduction to yoga for ages 12+ as they give detailed instruction on the basics including breath awareness, safety and attention to body mechanics / form. Regular yoga practice teaches students life-long skills to help reduce stress and release tension as well as building self-awareness. Homeschooling parents can also receive discounts on these classes which are offered via Zoom 5x/week. Contact Sandi for more information. To learn more about our Online Programs, click here.
